Start a Blog in 4 Easy Steps
Have you ever thought about starting a blog? Are you a teacher, fitness expert, great cook, great at saving money, an expert in your field, DIYer, crafter, love to make home improvements, car expert? We all have things we are passionate about and love to talk about. Why not blog about it?? It is so easy. It doesn’t take a lot of money to get started and you can potentially make this into a source of income!!! What’s holding you back? Here is how to start a blog in four easy steps.
Decide your domain name
This is simple and hard all at the same time. I spent months toying with a blog name before I landed on Transformedlovely. I knew I wanted to write to women and encourage them in their walk with the Lord. My dream has been to write bible studies, so by starting a blog, I have been getting my feet wet in writing devotionals and content based on God’s word and I have started writing my first Bible Study!!
What about you? When you are decided to start a blog, think about what you are passionate about, what you know, what interests you. Go with that. You want to write about what you are passionate about. It doesn’t have to be broad, it can be a narrow topic, but you know about it and you can help others in some way.
When you decide what you want to blog about, come up with a domain name. Your domain name should represent what your site is about. Research and make sure it isn’t taken or copyrighted. Then you are ready for the second step!
Set up hosting
I highly highly recommend Bluehost for starting out. There are ways to start a blog for free, like through wordpress.com or weebly.com, but you will have a harder time monetizing (making money) on your blog. It also looks a lot more professional to not have .wordpress.com at the end of your domain name.
With Bluehost, you can get hosting right now for as little as 3.95 a month. This is a great deal! They do a 30-day money back guarantee. If you are serious about this, I would recommend hosting for more than 12 months and lock in this great rate!
When you go to Bluehost through this link- You can see if your domain is available and begin to set up your account and get hosting.
With Bluehost, you get to install WordPress on your blog, in one easy click. Bluehost is the hosting for your account, so where your domain name resides. WordPress is where you build your blog. It is a great for getting started and easy to use.
Once you have chosen your domain name and set up your Bluehost account, your next step is to click the button that says install WordPress. This takes minutes. Write down your account information and passwords, so you don’t lose it.
To log into the WordPress site for your blog you will type in www.yourdomainname.com/admin
This will bring your log-in name. The email you used for your Bluehost account and password will get you in here. Now your up and running on WordPress.
Find a theme
This step was really scary for me. After I picked a domain name and installed WordPress, I almost had a panic attack. I did not have a clue how to get my website to look how I wanted it to. I stumbled upon Creative Market. They have a huge library of WordPress themes, as well as many others. The prices vary. I suggest to just go through these and find ones you like. I do recommend you get one that has a responsive layout. This means it will respond if someone is on a mobile phone or computer. This is important as most blog traffic now comes from phones.
I would also recommend you get one with the Genesis framework. The Genesis framework is like the shell of your website. You can read more about what the Genesis framework is by clicking here. There are themes on Creative Market that include the Genesis framework in their price, and then you will get their child theme. There are all kinds of plug-ins you can add to this to get started. This is not crucial. I just have really liked what I have been able to do with it.
Once you have your theme, get started! Your theme should come with a guide on how to set up each section. They should come somewhat customizable, so you can use it to fit your needs.
